Is 2 Fitness Classes a Week Enough for Parents?

October 23, 2026•6 min read

Is 2 fitness classes a week enough? It is one of the questions I get asked most by parents who are thinking about joining SYP Bootcamp. Usually it comes with a bit of guilt attached, as if two sessions is somehow cheating. So here is my honest answer, based on NHS guidance and over ten years of training busy people in Archway: two classes a week is a very good foundation, and with a bit of everyday movement in between, it can cover what the guidelines ask for.

Let me explain what that looks like in a normal, messy family week.

What the NHS actually recommends

The NHS physical activity guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64 say adults should:

  • do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week

  • do strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on at least 2 days a week

  • spread exercise evenly over 4 to 5 days a week, or every day

  • reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity

You can read the full guidance on the NHS physical activity guidelines page. The NHS lists brisk walking as an example of moderate activity, which is great news for parents, because you probably already do some of it.

Is 2 fitness classes a week enough on its own?

Let us do the maths honestly. Each SYP Bootcamp class is 45 minutes. Two classes give you 90 minutes a week.

That does a lot of the heavy lifting:

  • Strength: every class includes strength work for the whole body, so two classes tick off the NHS recommendation of strengthening on at least 2 days a week.

  • Activity minutes: 90 minutes gets you well on the way. Depending on how hard you push in the conditioning parts, some of that time will be vigorous, which counts for more.

Where two classes alone fall short is the spreading out. The NHS suggests activity over 4 to 5 days, or every day, and cutting down on long periods of sitting. Two classes is two days. So the honest answer is: two classes is enough for strength, and a strong base for the rest, but you will get more out of it if you add some easy movement on the other days.

The good news is that "the rest" does not mean more workouts. It means walking.

What to add between classes

This is the bit I want busy mums and dads to hear. You do not need a third or fourth gym session. You need to move a bit more in the life you already have.

Make the school run count

If you can walk the school or nursery run instead of driving, do it, and walk it briskly. Brisk means you can still talk but you would not want to sing. A 15-minute walk there and back on three or four days a week adds up quickly. Pushing a buggy up the hills around Highgate and Archway is genuinely hard work.

Get off a stop early

If you commute, hop off the bus or Tube a stop early, or walk to the next station. Archway to Tufnell Park, or Highgate to Archway, is a short, useful walk.

Weekend family walks

Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood, Waterlow Park or the Parkland Walk are all close by. A walk with the kids on a Saturday or Sunday counts, and it gets everyone out of the house.

Break up sitting

If you work at a desk, stand up and walk around every hour, even for a couple of minutes. Take calls on your feet. Play on the floor with the kids rather than watching from the sofa.

For more ideas on squeezing movement into a packed day, read my post on how to find time to exercise as a busy parent. If you want it laid out day by day, there is also a weekly workout plan for busy parents.

A simple example week

Here is roughly what a realistic week could look like. Swap the days around to fit your family.

  • Day 1: SYP Bootcamp class (45 minutes)

  • Day 2: Brisk walk on the school run (around 30 minutes total)

  • Day 3: Walk at lunch or get off a stop early (around 20 to 30 minutes)

  • Day 4: SYP Bootcamp class (45 minutes)

  • Day 5: Brisk walk on the school run (around 30 minutes)

  • Weekend: Family walk or park play, plus a proper rest day

That is two structured sessions and a lot of normal life, and it lines up well with what the NHS recommends. No 5am starts. No guilt.

Why consistency beats more sessions

I would much rather see a parent do two classes a week for six months than five classes a week for three weeks and then burn out. Missing sessions is normal when kids get ill or work gets busy. Two a week is easy to get back to after a bad week. Five is not.

If you have more time later and want to add a third session, great. But two is a perfectly good place to start, and for many parents it is the right number for a long time.

Where a small-group bootcamp fits

SYP Bootcamp was built for exactly this kind of week. Classes are 45 minutes, indoors at a church hall in Archway, N19, with a maximum of 10 people. Each session covers strength and conditioning for the whole body, and I give easier and harder versions of every exercise so it works for all fitness levels, including complete beginners.

Parents come from Archway, Highgate, Tufnell Park, Upper Holloway, Holloway, Crouch End and Kentish Town. Each class is £15. You can see this week's class times on the booking page and pick the two that fit your week best.

If you want a plan fully tailored to you, with your own programme and nutrition support, I also offer the 12-week body transformation with 1-1 personal training at SYP Fitness. But for most people, bootcamp is the easiest first step.

FAQs

Can I get fitter with just 2 classes a week?

Yes. Two well-structured classes cover the NHS recommendation for strength work on at least 2 days a week. If you add regular brisk walking on other days, you can get close to or meet the full weekly guidelines.

Does walking the school run really count as exercise?

Brisk walking is listed by the NHS as moderate intensity activity. If you are walking at a pace where you can talk but not sing, it counts towards your 150 minutes.

Should I rest between bootcamp classes?

Try to leave at least a day between the two classes so your muscles can recover. Gentle walking on rest days is fine and often helps you feel less stiff.

I have an injury. Is 2 classes a week too much?

Check with your GP or a physio first. Once you have the go-ahead, tell me before class and I will adapt the exercises for you.

Book your first class

Two classes a week, plus a bit more walking, is a realistic plan that a tired parent can actually stick to. Start with one, see how it feels, and build from there. Book my £15 class on the booking page, or call me on 07301 512215 if you would like to chat first.
